FAQ

Why are UltraDeck products a superior choice over traditional wood products?
UltraDeck products perform with long lasting durability and performance that you can’t get from wood. UltraDeck will not rot, warp, or splinter; and with a periodic cleaning UltraDeck is low maintenance.
If UltraDeck is made from recycled materials, why is it more expensive than wood?
While the majority of raw materials that are compounded in the extruding of UltraDeck products are recycled, the technology and process requirements that ensure outstanding performance and beauty are much more advanced then traditional milling equipment.
What is the lifetime value of UltraDeck?
UltraDeck never rots or warps and painting and staining are not required. In as little as four years, the total cost of owning UltraDeck is equal or less than the cost of a pressure-treated wood deck with maintenance. Over the life of the purchase, UltraDeck offers a greater value than wood. Clean UltraDeck periodically during the year and you’re done, so you can spend more time enjoying your outdoor living space, rather than working on it.
Will UltraDeck products weather (change color/fade)?
Because the wood fiber in UltraDeck will be exposed to sunlight, the product will lighten over time. UltraDeck will achieve its weathered color after 12-16 weeks.
Can you send me product samples?
You can find UltraDeck samples at your nearest Menards store or ask your contractor.
How heavy is UltraDeck?
UltraDeck weights about 2.5 lbs. per linear foot for the solid profile and about 1.4 lbs. per linear foot for the reversible profile.
Is UltraDeck code-compliant?
UltraDeck products have been tested to ensure compliance with the 2006 International Building Code. Check with your local building code department for jurisdictional requirements.
Does UltraDeck Decking get hotter than pressure treated wood?
In an independent study, UltraDeck was comparable in surface temps to pressure treated boards stained to similar colors.
Can UltraDeck railing be installed on concrete?
Yes. A Building Materials Team Member at your local Menards store can assist you with attachments for masonry.
How do you clean UltraDeck decking?
UltraDeck can be dry swept and cleaned with soap and water or any product made for washing composite decking.
Can UltraDeck be power washed?
Using a power washer with greater than 1500psi and /or applied closer than 12” from the deck surface could damage the surface. Always test washing technique on a small discrete area of your deck to test for desired results. Any issues related to power washing will not be covered under the UltraDeck warranty.
How do you clean UltraFence Fencing?
Since UltraFence is made of the same material as UltraDeck, the same cleaning methods apply.
Can I sand or rout UltraDeck Fusion?
No, Coextruded products with a polyethylene coating like UltraDeck Fusion, should not be sanded or routed.
Can the edges of UltraDeck Rustic be routed?
UltraDeck Solid profile routs nicely to give a crisp edge. Because of its hollow profile we do not recommend routing UltraDeck Reversible or UltraDeck Natural.
Can you rip UltraDeck boards?
UltraDeck products should not be ripped to reduce thickness, but can be ripped to reduce width and length. As long as the board can still be installed per the installation instructions the warranty will be valid. Please use care when fastening ripped boards, as pre-drilling may be necessary.
Can UltraDeck be sanded?
We do not recommend surface sanding. Sanding will change the appearance of the UltraDeck’s material surface. Any issues related to sanding will not be covered under the UltraDeck warranty.
Can UltraDeck decking be curved or bent?
With help and considerable patience, UltraDeck can be curved with proper tools and instructions. See your local Retailer of UltraDeck for Instructions.
Can UltraDeck be placed over a solid surface?
UltraDeck can only be installed over a solid surface when using a sleeper system.
Can I paint or stain my UltraDeck?
UltraDeck does not need painting or staining to maintain its look. If desired the brushed side of UltraDeck Natural may be stained with a good quality composite deck stain after one year of adequate weathering. Always follow stain Manufactures recommendations and keep in mind that staining is not a one time application and will add maintenance to your low maintenance decking.
What effects does heat have on UltraDeck?
As with many polymers heat will cause expansion and contraction. It is necessary to follow gapping recommendations provided in UltraDeck Installation Instructions. Gapping is not required on railing components because of the smaller profile.
Can UltraDeck be used in docks and water front decks?
We have seen UltraDeck used in many of these applications. As long as installation instructions are followed UltraDeck will work well and be very aesthetically pleasing in waterfront applications.
I have a scratch on my UltraDeck Rustic or Natural how can I fix it?
Just like other high end purchases, such as hardwood flooring, some additional care such as rubber pads attached to legs of tables, chairs and furniture goes a long way in preserving the new look of your deck. UltraDeck Rustic and Natural is the same composite material under its surface. UltraDeck's Recommendation for scuffs/scratches would be to rub out any raised edges of the Scuff/Scratch and allow Natural weathering to blend the color. In the case of Post sleeve it may be necessary to run a wedge or small screw driver down between the grooves to reform the raised lineal lines of the profile. Initially a color difference will be notice as the material exposed by the scuff has not been exposed to the elements but it will with time become a similar color.
Can I put a Hot Tub on UltraDeck?
The Substructure of the deck is the key element in if a Hot Tub can be placed on the deck. UltraDeck is not a Load-Bearing product and the joist of the substructure should be used as the support mechanism. Any load bearing pillars/legs should be place directly above a deck joist or sister joist in this application.
How do I remove ice from UltraDeck?
Salt can be used on UltraDeck Products to remove ice. As with many other surfaces, it is recommended that once the ice is melted excess salt be swept off deck prior to foot traffic to prevent surface scratches. The use of a rubber back path rug may also be considered. Although UltraDeck is durable we do not recommend using a metal edge shovel for snow removal, plastic tip is best and do not chip away at ice with sharp objects.
Black spots have appeared on the surface of my deck what is happening?
The black spots that you are seeing are most likely the result of a food source such as pollen and/or small particles of plant debris that have landed on top of the deck and started to decay resulting in mildew. Mildew is enhanced and more visible when wet and this is why you notice it more during times of high moisture. Cleaning of the deck with a product designed to remove mildew and algae from plastic and wood composite materials should help manage black spots on the decking. We have been informed of good results using Wolman DeckBrite Sku# 5539931or similar products. It is important to follow manufacture instructions and heavily stained areas may need a second application.
Can I order extra parts for Fusion Railing kits and if so How?
Yes. All components of UltraDeck can be purchased as individual parts through the Building Materials Desk at your local Menards store.
You have 3 different lines of decking which one is the best?
UltraDeck’s three product lines perform to satisfy different wants in decking so the question is really what you are looking for. UltraDeck Natural provides a look of untreated wood and fades much the same as untreated wood becoming a natural grey color with time. UltraDeck Rustic offers color options while providing a warm and textured look. UltraDeck Rustic has UV additives providing fade resistance, keeping colors from completely fading away over time. UltraDeck Fusion has the highest concentration of UV protection. Ultra Deck Fusion planks are co-extruded with an attractive wood grain embossed, fade resistant, polyethylene coating which resists the effects of weathering for a long-lasting, beautiful deck.
